How can telecommunication technologies help humanity?
The question can also be thought of as how can humanity help technology? EdgeConneX partners closely with amazing organizations such as Salute Mission Critical, which helps to transform military veterans into world-class data center technicians. Salute’s vision has always been to build a company that serves as a “bridge” for veterans to reach the data center industry and start careers. The critical shortage of skilled resources in this industry has helped further drive the growth of the organization. The double benefit of solving veteran unemployment and the personnel shortage has driven greater results than expected. EdgeConneX, working in lock-step with Salute, is an excellent example of the real-world success of humanity helping technology and technology changing lives.
What network-related development will have the greatest impact in our industry?
By far, the greatest development that will impact the industry is the rearchitecting of the Internet to make it more customer-centric than ever before. As noted by Cisco, global IP traffic will reach 4.8 zettabytes per year by 2022. Now, more than ever, it’s clear that the volume, velocity, and variety of data traffic flows are mandating a dramatic rearchitecting of the Internet. The next wave will see a range of edge form factors proliferate globally to serve such advanced technologies as 5G networks, artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous vehicles, along with the spreading adoption of industrial and consumer IoT applications as our homes, buildings, streets, factories, and entire communities become “smarter” and ever more connected.
The edge is the lowest latency point of demarcation between service delivery and consumption, and by processing data away from the cloud and closer to the source, the edge increases both the scalability and security of IoT-based applications. The number of connected IoT sensors and devices is expected to exceed 50 billion by 2022, up from an estimated 21 billion in 2018, according to Juniper Research. As a result, we will see networks covering so many things that will require so little time (latency) and for which edge infrastructure is the de rigueur solution.
