How can telecommunications technologies help humanity?
Telecommunications are essential to keep us connected in a digital world. We have seen through the pandemic more than ever just how important it is to be connected. With telecommunications and evolving capabilities of 5G networks, we can help humanity in ways previously unimaginable, for example, remote surgery. A world class surgeon may perform surgery by controlling different robotic arms to save the life of someone across the world who would not have had access otherwise. It enables us to use apps we do not take for granted like Uber. Advancements in infrastructure will enable us to work on closing the digital divide as well and better serve the underserved communities in the United States and around the world. As part of its agreement with the City of New York, ZenFi Networks is obligated to develop publicly accessible digital facilities, otherwise known as Gigabit Centers, for social good, and is well on its way to fulfilling that responsibility. These facilities will provide free public Wi-Fi access via the LinkNYC network, along with digital literacy training, free access to laptops and workstations, and other services to further help bridge the digital divide. It is very clear to see that telecommunications has evolved into a basic necessity for everyday life.
How can corporations and researchers best serve the next generation?
Being a millennial, I have found it very helpful in building my career and relationships to be a part of mentorship programs. In addition to mentorship programs, companies that offer internship opportunities are enabling the next generation to get their feet wet and to start learning how they fit in. There also needs to be more college recruiting from the telecommunications industry on campuses and the millennial generation should be the ones to spearhead this initiative.
Is it important for companies to continue to innovate their organization or offerings, and why?
Absolutely, everyday a new product or service becomes available especially as technology continues to evolve. It is essential for companies to continue to innovate, or they will be left behind in the constantly changing industry.
What value does PTC hold for you/your company?
Being a PTC Member has enabled our company to continue to develop relationships with senior leaders in business, technology, academia, and policy. It also allows us to stay connected with people throughout the years. The PTC Annual Conference is a core part of the telecommunications industry and I have been honored to be able to attend and participate.
How does PTC fit with your company’s goals or your overall career purpose?
ZenFi Networks’ mission is to power communities with connectivity. Similarly, PTC’s mission is to advance the ethical development and use of information and communication technologies. You can say that both PTC and ZenFi Networks have a similar goal which is to advance communication via collaboration, outreach, and knowledge.
What advice would you share with current and future graduates interested in this field?
If you are interested, get connected now! Look for mentorship or internship opportunities. This allows you to not only learn about the industry but also connects you with industry professionals. Do not let the industry lingo and the seemingly intimidating technologies daunt you! You don’t have to be an engineer to work in telecommunications, there are so many opportunities. And you will learn so much as you move along in your career.
What industry mogul or up-and-coming leader have you followed or are currently following, and why?
