Dr. Ricky Chau is chief strategy officer at CBC Tech based in Hong Kong. In his role, he is responsible for driving CBC Tech’s corporate strategy and transformation, leading business development, strategic partnership, and customer success.
Ricky has over 20 years of experience in the telecom and tech industries. Ricky joined CBC Tech from Lumen Technologies, where he recently served as vice president of enterprise business for Asia-Pacific and Japan. Prior to this role, he led the Asia-Pacific business for Global Crossing and Level 3 Communications.
Ricky earned his doctoral degree in business administration at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and holds an EMBA degree from the University of Ottawa in Canada.
How can telecommunications technologies help humanity?
Telecommunications service is like electricity and water which serve the basic needs of humanity. The demand for the Internet is growing very fast, telecommunications providers shall provide cost-effective services to help humanity to advance with the enabling infrastructure.
What network-related development will have the greatest impact in our industry?
The software-defined networking has the greatest impact in our industry because it is not just making the networking smarter, the convergence of telecom and tech is the future of our industry.
Is it important for companies to continue to innovate their organization or offerings, and why?
It is absolutely critical for any company to innovate. Innovation is not just limited to product or service offerings to meet the ever-changing needs of the customers. Companies shall innovate in their customer journey by providing differentiated customer experience as a competitive advantage.

What advice would you share with current and future graduates interested in this field?
The ICT industry is ever-changing with technologies evolving. You have to be a lifelong learner to work in the ICT industry to thrive in your career. Curiosity is also very important because this is a global industry with a very broad horizon.
What is something that not that many people know about you?
I started my career in the container shipping industry and shifted to the telecom industry when I was in my 20s. I found that there are a lot of similarities between these two industries such as moving containers versus moving data, impact to the economies, B2B customer journey, etc.
What has been a positive outcome organizationally or individually given the current state of the world?
The pandemic has accelerated CBC Tech to transform from a telecom provider to a tech provider to offer our cloud-native network and security services to our customers. In addition, we are transforming to improve our processes and technology to deliver a better customer and employee experience.
